FOUR TIMES FASTER WITH
When Lactalis-McLelland, one of Britain's largest producers of cheddar cheese, and Scotland's leading cheese manufacturer, needed reliable, effective weigh labelling equipment for their new line, where did they go? To market leading weigh price label manufacturers Herbert Industrial. And Lactalis-McLelland's choice resulted in major improvements in productivity and throughput. They have now been able to reduce manpower on this line by 50 per cent while increasing throughput by an amazing factor of four.Lactalis-McLelland settled on Herbert's Gemini weigh price labeller because of its capacity to handle product up to 8 kg while concurrently managing multiple labels, both top and bottom.
This process plant produce 5 kg cheeses which need to be accurately weighed and then labelled prior to shipment. Most whole cheeses require three labels, one of which is, at 360 mm, exceptionally large. Such a large labelling capacity would normally only be found on an OCM (outer case marker), but here it is a clear benefit of choosing Herbert's Gemini.
Once weighed and labelled, the cheeses, much of which go out under Lactalis-McLelland's own label Seriously Strong Cheddar, are shipped to the delicatessen counters at major retailers across the country where they are cut to meet individual customer needs.
Some 80 per cent of Lactalis-McLelland's output is own brand with supplies going to Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and other major supermarkets.
"We are very pleased with the productivity improvement," comments Paul Nugent, Lactalis-McLelland's Operations Manager "and the reduction in manpower is an additional benefit that we have gained by using Herbert Industrial equipment."
